What Your Accountant Does and What Your Business Needs They’re Not the Same Thing
This is not a post about accountants doing a bad job. Most accountants are doing exactly what they should be: compliance, year-end, tax, VAT. That’s their role, and it’s an important one.
But there’s a gap between what the accountant provides and what a growing business actually needs. And in a lot of owner-managed businesses, nobody’s filling it.
The accountant looks backwards. Year-end accounts tell you what happened last year. Tax returns deal with what you earned and what you owe. VAT is quarterly housekeeping. All necessary. All retrospective.
But the business owner needs to look forwards. Where will cash be in three months? What does the margin look like on that new contract? If we hire two more people, what does that do to the break-even? Can we afford the investment?
These aren’t accounting questions. They’re commercial finance questions. And they need someone who understands the business well enough to answer them in context, not just in theory.
The danger of the gap is that it’s invisible. The business has an accountant, so the financial side feels covered. But the accountant is solving last year’s problems. The business owner needs someone helping with next quarter’s decisions.
That’s where embedded finance support comes in. Not instead of the accountant — alongside them. Handling the management accounts, the cashflow forecasting, the day-to-day financial oversight and the commercial input that turns data into decisions.
Your accountant does an important job. But if the only financial input your business gets is retrospective and compliance-focused, there’s a gap. And in a growing business, that gap gets more expensive every year.
The question isn’t whether your accountant is good enough. It’s whether your financial support is complete enough.
